In 1977, Alexey Pajitnov started as a summer intern at the Soviet Academy of Sciences. After he graduated in 1979, he got a job at the Academy’s Dorodnitsyn Computing Centre, where he worked on speech recognition.

Alexey was fascinated by computer games because they connected logic and emotion, and he loved math and puzzles. He also liked thinking about how computers and people’s minds work together.

To create Tetris, he remembered playing pentominoes in childhood, a game where you use shapes to make pictures. He thought about how hard it was to put the pieces back in their box, and that’s how he got the idea for Tetris.

Using a computer at the Computing Centre, he started working on the first version of Tetris. It took him two weeks to make the first version, but he kept playing it and improving it. He finished it on June 6, 1985, even though it didn’t have levels or scores at first.

His coworkers like Dmitri Pevlovsky and Vadim Gerasimov helped him make Tetris for the IBM Personal Computer.

Alexey made a sequel to Tetris called Welltris, which was a 3D version. Tetris was managed by a Soviet company called ELORG, and they used the slogan “From Russia with Love” to promote it.
