Wayne Bennett started his career in rugby in places like Warwick, Toowoomba, and Ipswich. He played for teams like Past Brothers and Southern Suburbs in the Brisbane Rugby League.

He was a really good wing and a kicker. He represented Queensland nine times between 1971 and 1973. He credits his coach Bob Bax for influencing his coaching career.

Wayne played for the Brothers club in Brisbane, and in 1974, they reached the Grand Final but lost to Fortitude Valley. He was the top try scorer in the 1975 Brisbane Rugby League season.
